Pursue your dream of becoming a carpenter with this practical, hands-on qualification. You will develop the skills and knowledge to safely use carpentry tools and power tools, and learn how to construct structures such as pitched roofs, ceiling frames, eaves, wall frames, roof trusses, and flooring systems.

This course covers a wide range of essential carpentry techniques, including levelling operations, excavation, demolition of minor building structures, measurements and calculations, erecting and dismantling restricted scaffolding, and setting out projects. You will also learn how to assemble partitions, construct bulkheads, build timber external stairs, and construct, erect, and dismantle formwork for stairs, ramps, footings, ground slabs, suspended slabs, columns, beams, and walls. In addition, the course includes training in installing and replacing windows, linings, panelling, and mouldings, as well as interpreting plans and understanding workplace health and safety requirements in the construction industry.

This course is suitable for those who enjoy working outdoors, have an interest in timber construction, possess good hand-eye coordination, and take pride in completing work to a high standard.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in the construction industry with students completing 200 hours of work experience in the construction industry.

Study and Assessment mode

This course is delivered in a combination of theory and practical sessions. All practical sessions are conducted in a fully equipped trade training centre where students will have access to all relevant equipment and a chance to practice all the techniques as required by the training package. From term 3, students will also participate in 400 hours of workplace experience to ensure that skills are demonstrated in an industry context to industry standard; PCBT assessors will visit student worksites to observe skills in action. PCBT supports students with industry placements for its students to enhance skills and further employment opportunities, however, students are expected to work with PCBT to organise their placements. Assessment is competency based and is generally though questioning, project and practical demonstrations.

 

Entry admission requirements

Those students who wish to undertake this course should meet the following academic and English language requirements.

Year 11 or equivalent;
Various Certificate II Construction qualifications or with limited or no vocational experience and without a lower level qualification
Intermediate Level of English or
IELTS Test Score of 6.0 overall (General or Academic) or
TOEFL iBT Test Score of 60 or
PTE Academic Test Score of 51 or
Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) Test Score of 169 or
OET Pass Grade B or
PASS PCBT English Language Placement test ( Only for Level 1 & Level 2 countries)

The course duration is 104 weeks in eight ten-week terms. It is delivered for 80 weeks and 24 weeks of holidays depending on commencement date. Classes are scheduled for 20 hours per week, two days per week (Face To Face) plus 4 hours of scheduled study. Industry placement of 400 hours (20 weeks) will be organised and conducted during the final 2 terms of the course,.
